Foods I Fruit Tasting

Ms. Ferrelli’s Food and Nutrition 1 class at Starmount High enjoyed a fruit buffet today. Some of the taste treats were a comparison of fresh, canned, juiced, and dried pineapple, kiwi, raspberries, blackberries, fresh & dried papaya, hot ginger tea & dried ginger, red bananas & banana chips, fresh mango & mango juice, pomegranate juice, and coconut water.

Students found many new favorites today!

Starmount High School SkillsUSA Member Elected to State Officer Position

Even though we did not bring back any medals this year, I want to say how proud we are of the students that we took and how well they represented Starmount at the SkillsUSA Conference this year. These contests can last an hour to 7 hours and they really worked hard to finish in the top 5. We will know the final placement in a couple of weeks.

We also have GREAT NEWS that Nathan Darnell was elected with the help and support of his classmates as one of the 7 state officers in SkillsUSA for the State of North Carolina. Before the opening ceremony and the delegates meeting, Nathan had the opportunity to campaign before voting. The support of Starmount students was awesome to see as they passed out Dum Dum suckers and his slogan card that the students made for him in class.  Special Thanks to Mr.  Tutterow and his students for making the campaign poster.

Nathan will represent the state at the national conference in Atlanta in June of this year and serve for the 2023-2024 school year.

                                        Savannah Shore - 6th place

Diesel Technology -         Avery Buelin - 3rd place - $12,000 scholarship to UTI
                                                                                   $ 5,500 scholarship to NADC
                                                                                    $6000 scholarship to UNOH

Marine Service Technology -    Brady Trivette - 1st place - $10,000 scholarship to UTI
                                                                                             $ 7,500 scholarship to NADC
                                                  Jackson Martin - 3rd place - $3,000 scholarship to UTI
                                                                                                $2,500 scholarship to NADC

Power Equipment Technology -    Caleb Neff - 3rd place - $3,000 scholarship to UTI
                                                                                             $2,500 scholarship to NADC

Motorcycle Technology - Jaxon Phillips - 3rd place - $3,000 scholarship to UTI
                                                                                   $2,500 scholarship to NADC

My numbers could be off on NADC but UTI is confirmed for the above numbers. Avery pretty much has a full ride at this point stacking his scholarships from previous years. Either way that is a lot of money for those kids to further their education.

Also, please congratulate Reese Phillips. There was a slew of competitors in her Job Interview Competition. I want to say over 50. She made it to the final round of nine. I do not have the scores back yet and they only pulled the top 5 up on stage but she did well I thought. She fought hard to make it to the final round of 9.

What's Going on in the FACS Department at SHS?

Infant simulators went out last week in Child Development and will continue the rest of this month. Students are assigned a baby simulator from Friday morning until Monday morning.  They are required to care for the "infant" around the clock.

In Child Development students are studying objective 3.01 which is Understanding Brain Development.  Students discussed the parts of the brain and determined what activity happened in what region, and labeled those areas on a diagram. Students also made brain caps that included labels for specific tasks like seeing, reading and writing.

In Interior Design Studio students are working on Section 4 of our Performance Based Measure and doing our 3D floor plans and accessory boards and putting our links on our websites.

Lots of hands-on, real-world learning.  That's what CTE is all about!
