Business & Marketing Students Create Flyers

Students in Mrs. Matthews’ Exploring Business and Marketing classes completed personal flyers for the teachers and other staff members at Starmount Middle School.

Flyers are being displayed outside the teachers’ classrooms and staff’s office doors.

SECU Representatives Visit Starmount High School

Roger Cook and Kelly Hicks from the Yadkinville branch of the State Employee's Credit Union presented "The Reality of Money" to Mrs. Nicole Pardue's Business Essentials and Career Management students on Wednesday, March 22nd and Ms. Ferrelli’s Career Management students on March 23rd.

Each student was assigned a job, salary, family status and a credit score and had to make real-life decisions about housing, transportation, groceries, childcare, etc. with the realities they were assigned.

This was real-world learning at it's best!









Food and Nutrition I Students Practice Skills

Students in Ms. Ferrelli’s Food and Nutrition I students practice knife skills in class.

They practiced peeling, grating, mincing, slicing, and dicing.

Great hands-on life skills training!




















Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Ms. Olivia Ferrelli, this year’s CTE Teacher of the Year for Yadkin County Schools.  Ms. Ferrelli teaches the Food and Nutrition I and II as well as Career Management courses at Starmount High School. 

Ms. Ferrelli brings years of experience from the private sector into the classroom.  She holds very high expectations for her students, and is excited to see them try new things as part of the Foods curriculum and also to see them succeed.  Ms. Ferrelli is also involved with the National Technical Honor Society that recognizes high achieving CTE students.

The other finalists for CTE Teacher of the Year were Mrs. Angie Funk from Forbush High School, Mrs. Melanie Matthews from Starmount Middle School, Mrs. Michelle Saddler from Forbush High School and Mr. Steven Calloway from Forbush High School.

Congratulations to all the nominees and again to our winner, Ms. Ferrelli.

Wilkes Community College Advertising & Graphic Design Representative Visits Starmount High

Amber Ardner from WCC visited SHS and spoke with students in Mr. Tutterow’s Digital Design and Animation and Game Art Design classes and Mr. Wagoner’s Adobe classes on March 22, 2023.

Mrs. Ardner presented information on the programs offered at Wilkes and also talked about the specifics of what Graphic Design is and the vast variety of careers in the field. She shared projects that her students had completed as well.  She kept the students involved, offering prizes for their participation.

To end the session students participated in a PhotoShop Pictionary game.

Sean Gregory, a student in Mr. Allen's Animal Science I class at Starmount High School, created a presentation about animal by-products used in food dyes.

Effective Communication

Students in Mrs. Lawanda Brown’s Principles of Family and Human Services class at Forbush High School work on effective communication skills.  

Communication is an extremely valuable soft skill. 














Health Science Students Visit Northern Hospital

Health Science II students from Forbush High School visited Northern Hospital in Mount Airy on March 15th.  Northern has over 1000 employees.  They serve approximately 100 daily in their Emergency Department. 

Our students had the opportunity to use some of their state-of-the-art equipment, like the Anatomage table, a vein finder and an ultrasound machine.
