Students in the SHS HOSA
Chapter attended and competed at the State HOSA Conference last week.
Jazmin Rodriguez, who
competed in Health Career Photography, and Gibson Vestal, who competed in
Physical Therapy, advanced to round two of their event.
Jazmin took pictures of
three healthcare professionals, wrote a one-page summary about their job and
created a portfolio of her work. She had to submit the portfolio digitally
prior to the competition and only those who scored high enough would give a three-minute
presentation at SLC. She was able to give her presentation in which she gave
details about each picture.
Gibson Vestal took a test
at SLC and those scoring high enough advanced to round two in which eight
skills relevant to physical therapy had to be learned. During round two, Gibson
was asked to perform one of those skills.
Our chapter received the
Dr. Charles Drew Blood Sponsor award for collecting 100-200 units of blood last
year.
Twice as many students
from Starmount attended the conference as did last year. The students attended
educational symposiums and extended their learning beyond the classroom. They
were provided with opportunities they would not be able to receive at school.
They also realized the level of preparedness needed to be successful in events.
I believe it ignited a fire in them to continue to improve.
They had fun, made
memories and developed friendships that otherwise would not have been
made. It was a great experience
for these students!
Thank you to Ms. Matthews
for making this opportunity possible!
